He was the only son of George Cloudt and Elsie Ellen Campbell Bindewald. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Annie Laurie Bindewald Bush. His great-grandfathers arrived in Indianola as part of the Fisher-Miller Colony during the Republic of Texas and served as Texas Rangers during the change to statehood. By the time George "Bob" Bindewald was born in Seadrift on Jan. 9, 1922 the Rudolph Bindewald ranching family had experienced difficulty in the transition into farming. His high school education was interrupted by his work with the Civilian Conservation Corp in New Mexico, however, he did return to graduate from Port Lavaca High School. He served in the Fifth Air Force in Australia during World War II. When he returned from the Pacific his cousin Bert Bindewald got him a job gauging oil wells in the panhandle of Texas. There he was hired to work at the El Dorado American Petrofina Plant in Kansas where he worked his way up to plant manager and superintendent without the benefit of neither an engineering degree, the usual qualification, or a college education. His diligence and practicality were well respected. After retirement from that job he took another at the GAF Plant at Long Mott. A frugal and shrewd investor George managed to make frequent trips to places of interest in the world while creating a security that he did not know as a youth. George Bindewald was a member of the Patmos Lodge of the Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of El Dorado, Kansas for 56 years. His wry humor and witticisms culled from his voracious reading which including the writings of H.L. Mencken, Eric Hoffer, Edward Gibbon, as well as Texas history, science and technical literature will be sorely missed. To benefit society and honor his parents George E. Bindewald has established the George C. and Elsie Bindewald Scholarship Endowment Fund to further the education of graduates of Calhoun County High School and to assist them in attending the College of their choice. He is survived by his niece, Diane Mary Ellen Bush of Corpus Christi; two nephews, Lamar Calvin Bush of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Brian George Bush of Corpus Christi; as well as his grandniece, Lee Ann Elizabeth Bush of Houston. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the George C. and Elsie Bindewald Scholarship Endowment Fund in care of Susan Prukop, Wells Fargo Bank, Victoria, 361-574-5207 Mr. Bindewald was laid to rest on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, in Seadrift Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tom Sanders, Tommy Fisher, Tommy Stanfill, Walter Dierlam, Johnny Smith, and Joey Nunley. Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, 361-552-2988.
