All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm **************************************************** BOBO, CHARLES PEARSON Valley Morning Star, Publication date: 20 Apr 1935 Date of death: 19 Apr 1935 CHARLES PEARSON BOBO, 78, pioneer resident of Harlingen and widely known throughout the Valley, succumbed to a lingering illness Friday night at 8:55 at his family home 521 East Harrison. The deceased was a native of Smithville, Lawrence County, Ark., and before his death was the oldest person living born in that town. He was born July 12, 1857. Early life of Mr. BOBO was spent in mercantile and stock raising in Arkansas. He received his early school education in the Smithville public schools and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a degree in civil engineering. Mr. And Mrs. BOBO and children moved to Byars, in north Texas in 1904 where Mr. BOBO was engaged in farming and stock raising. In 1920 Mr. BOBO came to the Valley and Harlingen and immediately became active in church and fraternal life of the city. From 1922 to 1930 Mr. BOBO was manager and chairman of the board of directors of the irrigation district here. After retiring from the managership of the irrigation district, Mr. BOBO was elected finance commissioner on the city council and served the city for one term, 1932 and 1933. For the past several weeks Mr. BOBO has been suffering with an ailment of the heart and had been gravely ill since last Sunday. Mr. BOBO was an active member of the Masonic lodge for over 50 years and was active member of the Methodist church since his boyhood. Death of Mr. BOBO was the first in his immediate family. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. BOBO, three daughters, Mrs. J. W. Savage of McAllen, Mrs. P. H. Berry of Dallas and Mrs. K. K. Kirlin of Oklahoma City; five sons, L. S. BOBO, Scott BOBO and Jesse BOBO, all of Harlingen, Max BOBO of Raymondville, and Horace BOBO of Edcouch; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. All of the family was present at the home of Mr. BOBO at the time of his death. Body of Mr. BOBO is being held at Thompson Mortuary pending completion of funeral arrangements. Funeral services probably will be held Sunday.
