Cass Co. TX - Killing of Dr. Avinger, 1881 Submitted by: June E. Tuck <1224be@neto.com> Copyright. The Dr. was a clever and well to do gentleman, practiced medicine, kept a wayside house for travelers, and a small store. Two or three years ago was sent to the Legislature. Reprimanding a negro for some offence a few days since, the negro cut him in the bowels, letting them out. It was a fiendish and malicious act, without provocation. The Dr. died in two days after the cutting and was buried with masonic honors. The negro will doubtless pay the penalty of his crime. (The Standard, Jly. 15, 1881)
