The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. ************************************************************************ Zachary Bartholamew Stokes was the son of Bartholamew Stokes and Louisa Lafayette Pate, the dau. of John Pate (1789-1855 St. Clair Co., AL) and Armarinda Camp (1803 GA-1876 Sabine Parish, LA), the sister of John Lay Camp for whom Camp Co., TX is named. According to enlistment records Bartholamew was b. 1817 Jersey City, New Jersey. He enlisted in the U. S. Dragoons in New York City. His occupation was listed as shoemaker. He was assigned to Troop F. 2nd U. S. Dragoons and was discharged on 3 Sept 1844 at Fort Jessup, LA. Bartholamew marched with Gen. Taylor from Alexandria to Monterrey, MX. While fighting in Mexico, Bartholamew was thrown from a horse into a bed of catus. He also received a gunshot would on the left side of his neck. Records show he died of complications from the wounds back in Sabine Parish, LA. (The family believes he is buried in Port Isabel along with other soldiers.) Z. B. Stokes was born on 13 Mar 1847. He was kidnapped for a new hours by his Mexican nursemaid so he and his mother missed the boat back home. She later returned by cattleboat. Louisa married #2 Joseph Currie. Z. B. received a Land Bounty based on his father's service in the Mexican War. He, his mother and stepfather moved to this land in Cherokee Co., TX. Zachary worked building the I. & G. N. Railroad and the Texas and Pacific through Dallas. He married Martha Ann McNeil (1853 Cherokee Co. -1928 Cherokee Co.) dau. of James W. McNeil & Elizabeth Bean Selman; 26 Oct 1872 Cherokee Co., TX. They purchased a farm near the Angelina River. He joined the Peoples Party and was nominated to its Cherokee Co., Convention in 1894 to be the nominee for state representative. Zachary won the election. IN January 1896 Z. B. introduced H. B. #240 in the House to repeal the law in regard to limitation running against married women and placing them on the same legal footing as widows, old maids, and other single women. A similar bill was introduced and it passed. He also supported Gov. James Stephen Hogg's proposal of an anti-prize fight law in 1896. He was reelected in 1896 but retired to return to his farm and family. He died on 12 Nov 1921 of pneumonia and is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
