The average reader, noting this headline in his favorite newspaper, would scratch his head, think the Cochran County Chamber of Commerce was behind on its works and would read something else. But this is an increase of 3 per cent for the Cochran County inhabitants. In the census ten years ago, it had 65 persons. Now it has 67. This county, with its 357 square miles of grazing lands, is one of the twenty Texas counties with less than one person per square mile. The few persons in it are engaged in ranching or kindred business. The Legislature created this county out of Bexar County in 1876. It is located in Staked Plains on the border between Texas and New Mexico. It has one small settlement, Edwards, to which a small railroad extends from New Mexico. According to the Encyclopedia the county's products, including farming and cattle, amount to $147,034 annually. The largest part of this is from cattle, though the land, fed by numerous springs and underground streams produces well. Most of the ranchers in this county have gardens and orchards for their own use. In 1834 Robert Cochran of Boston came to Texas with a small stock of mercantile goods. He joined the Texas army in February 1936 and fought against the Mexicans. The Legislature named the county for him. The county was uninhabited by anyone except the Indians until after the Civil War. As the old-time cattlemen pushed on by the advance of the homesteaders, moved westward, they advanced into the county, driving the buffalo and Indians before them. In 1900 diligent search by the census takers showed 25 persons in the entire county.
