Melton's Lubbock trial is set May 27, and an attempt to free him from his guards may be made by his friends while he is en route there, officers have learned. Melton has been sending messages to friends both by letter and by word of mouth, asking them to assist him in a break for freedom. Federal officers have deciphered double-talk codes used by Melton in sending these messages. Saw blades and $300 in cash smuggled to Melton in jail have been confiscated recently. Melton will be tried in Lubbock with Chick Rogers, another former member of the Kimes gang also held in jail here. They are accused of a bank robbery at Morton, Cochran County. A heavy guard of federal officers will escort the pair to Lubbock, and United States Marshal J. R. (Red) Wright said he was confident they would be able to cope with any emergency.
