Witherspoon WITT, Rey - 1855 - 1904 WYATT, Twins - (graves) (There are at least 14 unmarked graves.) Historical Marker (Near Tennyson Post Office, US 277) Established by pioneers of Mule Creek Community, a small frontier settlement founded in 19th Century. Said to be named either for (1) an early horse and mule ranch, or (2) a stagecoach mule who died at a creek which runs nearby. The Abilene - Fort Concho Stage once served area. For years principal building was a combination school - church. Since 20th Century, shift to urban living has diminished population of Mule Creek. Inscriptions on tombstones chronicle history of community. In spring, grounds are covered with Bluebonnets, state flower. (1971) Additional Information on Cemetery: (1) Cemetery lovingly cared for many years by Mr. Ben Brooks who lived nearby. He personally made many concrete markers for graves that were unmarked. (2) Mr. Elmer Allen (1890 - 1973) left money in his will for a new Chain Link Fence to encompass the cemetery and for trees to be planted in the cemetery. (3) A reunion is held every summer - usually in August - for residents, and former residents of that part of Coke County. In 1975 people came from as far away as Kansas.) NOTE: If you have trouble locating the cemetery, stop at the Post Office and General Store in Tennyson, Texas. There is almost always someone there who can help.
