September 16, 1994 ROBERT LEE BAPTIST Celebrates Anniversary The Robert Lee Baptist Church recently celebrated their 90th Year Anniversary. The church was organized July 25, 1904, with 14 charter members. Celebration activities included a covered dish supper, a wonderful time of fellow-ship among members and former members on Saturday night August 6, 1994. A great attendance and an exciting worship experience on Sunday morning, August 7. A delicious meal was served immediately after the worship service with approximately 120 present. The celebration was climaxed with the opportunity to hear these former pastors in the afternoon service: Taylor Henley (pastor 1941-42); Fred Blake (1944-49); Ernest D. Stewart (1949-52); and James C. Shipman (1952-1955). Bennie Smith (1955-59) attended the morning service. Sadye Chumley is the oldest (99 years of age) member of the Robert Lee Baptist Church. She resides in West Coke County Nursing Home and was unable to attend the anniversary. Several persons have been a member of the church for 50 plus continuous years. They are: Margaret (Roane) Jones, joined 1938; William (Bill) Allen, 1941; Reba (Wood) Tabor, 1942; Ruth Casey Williams, 1944; Janet Dean Baker, 1942; D. J. Walker, 1941; Cumbie, Sr. and Mary Ivey, 1944. Several other members have been members for 50 years plus, but not continuously. They are Weldon Fikes and Bryce Fikes, 1932; they left Robert Lee for a few years for Army and college, and others. Weldon Fikes and Kenneth Lackey are the oldest ordained deacons.
