Including also the Minutes of the WOMAN'S AUXILIARY Next session will be held with Bethel Church, eight miles south of Ballinger, beginning at 1:30 p. m., on Tuesday before the first Sunday in September, 1926. Annual sermon by L. B. Smith. OFFICERS: Moderator. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . H. H. Stephens, Winters Clerk . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Alvin Swindell, Ballinger Treas. and Cor. Sec. . . . . . . E. W. Patterson, Winters, Rt 4 Missionary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . J. R. McCorkle, Ballinger PROCEEDINGS TUESDAY AFTERNOON On Tuesday before the first Sunday in September, 1925, which was the first day of the month, the Runnels County Missionary Baptist Association began its eighteenth annual session in the building of the Valley View, church five miles northwest of Ballinger. On the same day the Woman's Auxiliary of the Association held its annual session in the tabernacle near the church building.* The program occupied the entire day. See proceedings farther on. After a song the body was called to order by Moderator H. H. Stephens. A motion was carried that all those present who knew themselves to be duly elected messengers from the churches consider themselves as constituting the Association for the transaction of business. At this point one of the messengers, W. D. Jennings, presented a paper challenging the right of the messengers of the Bronte church to seats in the Association. The paper was read before the body, after which the Moderator ruled the challenge out of order on the ground (1) that the challenge did not come as the official action of any church, but from an individual messenger, and (2) that it was not the business of the Association to occupy its time with the disciplinary matters of a local church. (The paper containing the challenge had set forth the claim that the Bronte church, by virtue of the way in which it had handled the case of Rev. D. M. West, a former pastor, was not entitled to representation in the Association). Following the Moderator's ruling that the matter was out of order, the challenger appealed to the body to determine whether or not it would sustain the ruling of the Moderator. A vote was taken on the appeal and the Moderator's ruling was sustained by a vote of 41 to 2. The body then proceeded to the election of officers, resulting as follows: Moderator, H. H. Stephens; Clerk Alvin Swindell; Treasurer and Corresponding Secretary, E. W. Patterson. On motion it was ordered that the Moderator appoint a committee on order of business. This report was read by R. D. DeWeese and discussed by himself. Attention is called to some resolutions contained in this report which are as follows: "Resolved (1) That we strongly urge our college presidentsand boards of trustees to, vigilantly protect against the teaching of evolution and other errors which would in any way tend to destroy their faith in the Bible. (2) That no teacher who has lost faith in the inspiration of the Bible be retained on the faculty of any of our schools and colleges. (3) That our people refrain from circulating unproven reports which would be detrimental to the prosperity of our educational institutions. (4) That pastors and all other church workers urge our young people to attend our own institutions of higher learninf." The report was adopted, after which President E. Godbold of Howard Payne College made a most satisfactory talk on our Christian education work. The report on the 1925 Program was presented, followed with discussions by Alvin Swindell and M. A. Quindlen. Report was adopted. At this point a motion was carried that there be no night service in order that the people might attend the revival meeting in Ballinger which was being conducted by Evangelist B. B. Crimm. Report on State Missions was read and discussed by John M. Riddell. After further discussion by H. H. Stephens and H. B. Sanders the report was adopted. The report on Religious Literature was discussed by Rev. M. A. Quindlen. It was further discussed by F. T. Blanchard, J. N. Key, John M. Riddell, J. B. Adams, and J. F. Steel, after which it was adopted. J. B. Adams called the attention of the body to a certain clause printed by certain publishers as a caption over the fourth chapter of I John, and offered the following resolution which was adopted: Resolved that this Association go on record as opposed to any publishing house inserting the following caption over I John 4: "He warneth them not to believe all teachers, who boast of the Spirit, but to try them by the rules of the Catholic faith." The report on Foreign Missions was read and discussed by V. E. Stokes. After further discussion of our work in China by Miss Copeland the report was adopted. During the Association a number of visitors were recognized among whom were Rev. W. S. Yancey, lately moved to Ballinger, Rev. J. A. Dekle, Rev. Steel of Brownwood, President E. Godbold of Howard Payne College, Dr. W. F. Fry of Simmons University, Rev. H. B. Sanders of Austin, Missionary S. F. Baucom of Concho Valley Association, and Rev. D. Ruiz, Mexican Missionary of San Angelo. At 5:30 the body adjourned to meet Wednesday morning at 9:00. WEDNESDAY MORNING The body was called to order at 9:00 a. in., and a devotional service was led by Brother Steel of Brownwood followed with prayer led by Missionary M. A. Quindlen. A petitionary letter front the Union Baptist Church in Concho County was presented by the pastor of that church, Rev. A. J. Lee of Eden, Texas. In the absence of any statement of the articles of their faith the pastor of the church was asked a number of questions to ascertain the belief of the church and their denominational sympathies, etc. The questions being answered satisfactorily, the body voted to receive the messenger into its fellowship. The first order of business was the report on Home Missions, prepared by L. B. Smith and read by Brother Steel. After brief discussion by Brthren Dekle, Steel, Smith, DeWeese, and Quindlen, the report was adopted. The report on Orphanage and Hospitals was presented by W. S. Yancey and was adopted by the body. The report on Associational Missions was presented by John Heck. One paragraph in this report recommended that we discontinue our regular Associational Missionary for the coming year and employ a missionary to the Mexicans instead. The body voted to refer this paragraph to the Eexecutive Board for their consideration. Otherwise the report was adopted after discussion by Brethren Heck, Nicholson, Smith, Quindlen, Riddell and C. H. Garrett. A digest of the church letters had been prepared by a committee and was presented by S. H. Daugherty at this time setting forth the outstanding facts contained in the letters in their total aspect. Missionary M. A. Quindlen presented his annual report to the body as follows: Report of M. A. Quindlen My Dear Fellow Workers: In making this my sixth annual report I come with my heart full of gratitude to Almighty God for his continued favors and blessings upon the work of Our Association. This has been indeed a good year with us, a year of growth and strength. Nearly all of our churches have been blessed with glorious revivals, Special mention we think ought to be made of the meetings at Winters, Drasco, Pumphrey, Wingate, Wilmeth, Bronte, Paint Rock, Hatchel and Oxine. These were not only protracted meetings but were real revivals, marked with the power of God, many folks were saved and followed the Lord in Baptism. We feel that special mention ought also to be made of the Norton Church. This church has had a good year of splendid growth and development under the leadership of Scott W. Hickey. I believe that this church is soon to take its place among the real constructive forces of Texas.Baptists as the Kingdom progresses. This has also been a good year of growth in building meeting houses. Four of our churches have built houses of worship, Brookshire, New Home, Tennyson and Eagle Branch has bought a house and moved it on their ground and have a splendid house of worship. This leaves only five of our twenty-nine churches without houses of worship and three of them have planned for buildings and will likely build this next year. This has also been a good year of growth with our people in their financing the kingdom work. Nearly all of our churches are paying the salary of their pastor's monthly and some have voted an increase to their pastor's salary and several are giving regularly to the Baptist Program for 1925. About twenty of our churches have put on and are operating the budget in carrying on their finances. As another indication of the growth of our people in liberality the Missionary Board of the Association has not had to borrow any money this year to take care of its work and yet the Missionary has been paid promptly each month. Our Church Building Association is making some progress, they have helped two of our churches in building their houses of worship. Our only trouble to date is that we have not enlisted enough of our people to make this Building Association do what it ought to do, we ought to raise it at least to one thousand members. At the beginning of this associational year your Missionary gave his time and strength to the finishing in our association of our part of the 75 million campaign. I give it as my conviction that in this respect we did well and along with this campaign I tried to encourage our' people in taking their place in our 1925 program and putting on of the Budget in all of our churches but for some reason the Budget and our present program is not making the progress that it deserves to make among our people. During the year the Missionary has preached 215 sermons and addresses; baptized 51, joined our churches by letter 39, subscriptions taken for Baptist Standard, 14, Deacons ordained 8, and one Mexican church organized. Collected for Associational Missions $226.45, collected for 75 million, $367.77, other objects $395.50, total collections $989.72. Our book business: books sold, 451, received on book sales gross, $675.00, profit from book sales $83.39, on hand $150.00, total in books and cash $283-39. Now in concluding this report I want to say to each one of you that from my heart I thank you for the fine way in which you have prayed for and cooperated in the work that I have tried to do; these five years and three months have been among the happiest days of my ministry and I pray that Almighty God shall lead and direct in the choice of the man that is to take my place in the missionary work of the Association. M. A. QUINDLEN, Missionary. The Missionary's report was adopted. Following this the body extended to Brother Quindlen a rising vote of thanks for his faithful services during the past five years, after which the Association was led in prayer by John M. Riddell. Later in the day the following resolution concerning Brother Quindlen was adopted unanimously by the body: "The Runnels County Association, now in session At Valley View desire to hereby express its abiding confidence in Rev. M A. Quiudlen, our Missionary for the past five years and who is now voluntarily retiring for other work, as one of God's great and capable servants whose life and labors among us are highly appreciated and never to be forgotten. We pray God's richest blessings upon him and all his future labors." The report on B. Y. P. U. work was presented by W. B. Cotten, and after brief discussion was adopted. The report on Sunday School work was presented by Bert E. Low and after discussion was adopted. The Women's work was presented in a full report by Mrs. H. H. Stephens. It was briefly discussed by Mrs. Stephens and Mrs. Alvin Swindell, after which it was adopted It was announced in this connection that the Woman's Auxiliary of Runnels Association had a one year scholarship in Howard Payne College to offer to some worthy girl, following which Miss Elva Massengale of the Drasco church was awarded the scholarship. By motion the body invited Rev. B. B. Crimm, to preach at the opening of the afternoon session. Body adjourned for lunch. WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON Immediately after lunch the executive board was called in session. Meeting of Executive Boaxd The Board was called to order and it appeared that the following churches were represented: Antelope, Ballinger, Bethel, Bronte, Content, Drasco, Eagle Branch, Blanton, Hopewell, Miles, New Hope, New Joy, Norton, Oak Creek, Oxien, Tennyson, Valley View, Wilmeth, Wingate, Winters. The Board organized for the new year by electing H. H. Stephens of Winters chairman and Alvin Swindell of Ballinger, Secretary. The Association Clerk raised the question as to the advisability of printing the various reports on denominational work in the minutes, showing that it required much space and cost which might be used some other way to greater profit. The Board voted to omit the reports from the minutes. The Treasurer made a verbal report at this time showing all debts paid for the year and an unused balance of some $38.00, besides some $50.00 on minutes. A motion was carried not to make any deduction from Brother Quindlen's salary for a week he had spent in another part of the state holding a meeting. The committee appointed many months ago to look into the advisability of selling the Rowena Baptist lot, and which had recommended that the lot be retained, was discharged. A report was had from the committee which had been appointed to recommend a Missionary, on the basis of Brother Quindlen's announcement that he would retire from the work. The committee stated that after full and careful investigation they would recommend Rev. J. R. McCorkle, the present Missionary of Coleman Association. The report was received as information for the board. On motion the board decided to proceed in the election of a Missionary. The salary was set at $1800.00 a year and it was decided not to ask the state board for any assistance. The board, after prayer, proceeded to elect by secret ballot. On the first ballot Brother McCorkle received the highest vote but not a majority, out of the five persons voted upon. On the second ballot he received a ma"jority, after which it was promptly made unanimous. W. B. Cotten of Antelope was elected to serve with the Missionary as a program committee for all Associatio'nal meetings the coming year. The following committee was appointed to make suggested apportionments for the churches in raising Associational mission money for the coming year: Alvin Swindell, John Heck, M. C. Golden. It was decided to hold the next Workers Meeting at Wingate Tuesday after the fourth Sunday in September. The board adjourned to meet at the call of the chairman. Association Session Following the Board meeting the Association re-assembled in the afternoon and heard a sermon delivered by Evangelist B. B. Crimm. The visit was really a homecoming for the Evangelist, as he began his ministry at this place fifteen years ago. The sermon was delivered with spiritual power and was well received. After the sermon the body listened to a report on the Budget and Systematic Giving as presented by J. N. Key. After discussion by J. N. Key, Alvin Swindell, Bert Low, *John M. Riddell, and John Heck the report was adopted. J. B. Adams presented the report on Aged Ministers Relief and discussed the report, followed by J. E. Nicholson and R. M. Cumbie. The report was adopted. The report on Obituaries was read by M. C. Golden, and was adopted by the body. (See memorial page farther one). Nominations The report on Nominations was presented by T. P. Massengale and was adopted as follows: Annual meeting, 1926, Bethel church. Time, Tuesday before the first Sunday in September, 1926, at 1:30 p. m. A vote of thanks was extended to the Valley View church and community for the splendid hospitality which they had shown in caring for the messengers of the Association. By standing vote Floyd Wiley was chosen as messenger from Runnels Association to the next session of the Southern Baptist Convention. The following were elected as messengers to the next session of the Baptist General Convention of Texas: R. D. DeWeese, Mrs. R. D. DeWeese, Mrs. Alvin Swindell, J. E. Nicholson, J. R. McCorkle. Missionary S. F. Baucom of Concho Valley Association was present and was recognized as a visitor. He made a few remarks in the interest of the new Baptist Sanitarium at San Angelo. D. Ruiz of San Angelo, missionary to the Mexicans of his section was recognized as a visitor, and gave a very interesting and brief discussion of his work among the Mexicans. Adjourned to meet one year hence. H. H. STEPHENS, Moderator. ALVIN SWINDELL, Clerk. Reports The various reports presented during the Association on the several denominational causes including Missions, Education and benevolence, are omitted from this Minute by order of the Executive Board, the reasons being (1) that our denominational papers carry ample discussions of all these subjects from time to time, and (2) that when such reports are carried in the Minutes they are seldom read, thus requiring space and cost greater than their use justifies.-CLERK. Harrison, Winters --------------------------------------------------------------------------- WOMAN'S AUXILIARY, 1925 - Runnels and Coke Counties, TX The Woman's Auxiliary to the Runnels County Baptist Association met in annual session with the Valley View Baptist church Tuesday, September 1, 1925, at 10 a. m. Opening song was led by Mrs. Stanley Armstrong. Prayer by Mrs. Sivells. Devotional led by Mrs. Hill Jackson. Welcome address was given in a very cordial way by Miss Turner of Valley View. In the absence of Mrs. Alexander the response was made by Mrs. E. W. Patterson in her bright, happy manner. Visitors from other Associations were recognized at this time: Mrs. Sivells, Dr. and Mrs. Godbold, Brownwood; Mrs. Stanley Armstrong of the Crimm evangelistic party; Miss Laura Copeland, China. We were pleased to have Mrs. Armstrong speak on the uplifting effect of the wonderful masterpieces, the greatest masterpiece being that of life. We much enjoyed a reading of "The Lost Word" by Miss Susie Hale. We were very glad, as we always are, to have Mrs. Godbold speak to us in a message from her heart on the great task that lies out before us. Here we were privileged to hear the sweet strains of "II Trovatore" as played by Herbert Preston and Edwin Swindell. Report on Young People's work, by Mrs. Patterson of Winters, was adopted, and a demonstration of this work Was given by the G. A.'s of Winters in a well trained manner. By vote the message from Miss Copeland was deferred until after the noon hour. Recessed, with prayer by Brother Golden, until 2 p. m. The afternoon session convened by singing, "Work for the Night is Coming." Devotional was led by Mrs. H. H. Stephens who read Luke 10. Here we had the unusual privilege of having Miss Copeland, a returned missionary from China, speak to us on the customs of the Chinese. Prayer by Miss Copeland. We were glad to have with us our District President, Mrs. Sivells, who brought a message full of enthusiasm, also greetings from other Auxiliaries. Her theme was, "Launching out into the deep"--a call to sacrificial service. Our local presidents were called to the front, and gave encouraging reports from our local societies, ten reporting. A round table discussion, led by Mrs. DeWeese, one of our most capable women, was very helpful. The following official reports were adopted as read: Personal Service, Mrs. Will Cumbie; Benevolence, Mrs. E. D. Farmer; White Cross, Mrs. W. I. Raley; Christian Education, Mrs. E. Shepperd; Mission Study, Mrs. H. H. Stephens; Missions, Mrs. Pumphrey. Miss Copeland spoke to the Mission report. The greatest need is, our prayers and help to answer them.
