He graduated from Bronte High School and worked on the family farm. James enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 during World War II. During his training periond he met and married Evelyn Bobo in 1943. James served in the South Pacific and China Theater of Operations. This Theater consisted of the Burma Straits and Himalayas Mountains - referred to as "the Hump". The "Hump" was a sky road 525 miles long that was flown by the Air Transport Command, carrying cargo to China from India. James, the crew and their B24 were shot down twice but were able to return to their base-camp each time. Information from James was limited dure to censuring of his mail. State War Dept. notiefied his wife, Evelyn of his mission in action on December 18, 1944. His remains were never recovered. JAMES "TINKER" VAUGHN (Clipping from Bronte Enterprise per editor) Information came Sunday night that James D. Vaughn, son of Mr. & Mrs. Homer Vaughn and grandson of Mr. & Mrs. DC Brunson has been reported as "missing in action" since December 17. He wife telephoned to Fate Brunson Sunday night from her home in Meridian, Idaho that she had been just advised. James or "Tinker", as everybody called him was a radio technician with the Air Corps in China. He had been in the service two years. No furthur information has been had, except a letter from a sister of one of the crew, with which James was working, to the effect that she had received the same information in reference to her brother.
