A scrapbook is filled with stories of women who lived in Coke County. This scrapbook is filled with stories of women who lived in Coke County. These particular women loved to quilt and visit with one another at church or socials. Sometimes they took turns quilting in each other's homes. Some you may remember and others maybe not. Some ladies were born in the late 1800's, some later. These women came from all walks of life, and ancestry. Some migrated from Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia to settle in parts of Coke County. Their families farmed or ranched in Sanco, Edith, or Wildcat. They made many sacrifices and some raised their children in a four room house. They didn't always have running water in their houses. Some had to carry water from a well or river. Some of their husbands were judges, lawyers, or other county officials. They were pioneers that opened up communities and schools in Coke County. They women didn't all attend church at the Methodist Church, however they quilted there. These were called "Friendship Quilts". Dedication day for honoring the quilting women will be November 2 at the First United Methodist Church of Robert Lee at the 11:00 service.
