They cooked the meats in a huge pit in the ground covered by green mesquite limbs and wet burlap bags which facilitated smoking. Brother R. E. Hickman and wife Daisy of Bronte attended as did brother Frank Hickman of San Antonio. Sisters who came were Sallie Long of Eunice New Mexico and Leimanna Modgling of San Angelo. They were photographed sitting together in cane bottom chairs in front of about a hundred proud, happy group of Texans related by blood and marriage. The Pit Master was Austin Sandusky and EArl Turner. they made "Son of a Gun" in an open pit and in jest called it "Gentleman from Odessa". This year, the reunion was at the park in Bronte, June 27 and 28. Fearing a renege by our aging Pit Master, the meat was precooked in plastic cooking bags and then smoked, sauced and sliced. Pete Hickman cooked four beef briskets in a traditional sauce. Frankie Beth Williams cooked a beef brisket with Horseradish Sauce and a pork brisket with fruit sauce.
