Submitted by Jo Collier - jomar@wcc.net 11 Oct 2000 ***************************************************************** The Robert Lee Observer,8 October, 1954, Robert Lee, TX Death came at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, to Mrs. Bailey Russell, former Robert Lee teacher and one of the community's most respected citizens. Her passing occurred at Coke County Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient the past week. Mrs. Russell had been in failing health a number of years, but two weeks ago was able to make a trip with her husband to visit her mother at Liberty Hill. Funeral services were held Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Robert Lee Methodist Church, with the pastor, Rev. Warren Ellis, officiat- ing. Arrangements and burial in the Robert Lee Cemetery were in charge of Clift Funeral Home. Pallbearers were G. L. Taylor, Delbert Vestal, F. C. Clark, C. A. Brown, Otto Wojtek, Fred McDonald, Jr., Bryan Yarbrough and H. C. Allen Mary M. Stubblefield was born Sept. 22, 1897, at Liberty Hill, Texas, where she attended school and grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Bailey Russell of Robert Lee on June 28, 1927. Surviving are her husband, her mother, Mrs. W. O. Stubblefield of Liberty Hill; three sisters, Mrs. J. E. Humphries and Mrs. H. E. Phillips of Liberty Hill and Mrs. L. B. McLaren of Mesquite; and three brothers, M. A. Stubblefield of Ft. Stockton, S. H. Stubble- field of Liberty Hill and C. F. Stubblefield of Bertram. At an early age Mrs. Russell joined the First Methodist Church at Liberty Hill and later affiliated with the Robert Lee Methodist Church. She was a devoted member the rest of her life, for she loved her church. Miss, Mary, as her friends lovingly called her, taught first grade in the Robert Lee schools from 1923 until 1941, when she resigned because of failing health. Before coming to Robert Lee, she taught five years in the Williamson County schools. In all, Mrs. Russell devoted 23 years of her life to the teaching profession. Her pupils and many friends are in sorrow with her family at her passing, for to know her was to love her.
