Officiating were the Rev. Ray Lee of Rankin, formerly of Robert Lee, and the Rev. Warren Ellis, present pastor. Burial was in Robert Lee Cemetery under the direction of Clift Funeral Home. Nephews serving as pallbearers included Raymond and Joe McCutchen of Robert Lee, T. C. McCutchen of Eagle Pass, Jack McCutchen of Van Horn, Everett McCutchen of Gatesville and Ben Keyes of Christoval. A son of the late C. W. and Elizabeth McCutchen, Jess was born Oct. 25, 1896, four miles east of Robert Lee where his parents had settled as pioneers. He grew to manhood here and was engaged in the ranching business most of his life. For a time he operated the home place and later had leases at Sanco and Edith. He was interested in sponsoring local rodeo shows and was a good roper himself. He had been ill a number of years and had been faithfully cared for by his sister, Eula McCutchen. His passing occurred at 3 a.m., Aug. 6, in Memorials Hospital in San Angelo where he had been a patient ten days. All his children were here for the funeral, except a son, Carol, who had visited his father a few days prior to his death. Mr. McCutchen married Miss Elva Coleman of Bronte. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Weldon McCutchen of Eagle Pass and Carol McCutchen of Falfurrias; two daughters, Mrs. D. D. Pennington of Lubbock and Mrs. M. L. Felker of Avinger; two brothers, Walker McCutchen of Pecos and Jim McCutchen of Robert Lee; two sisters, Miss Eula McCutchen of Robert Lee and Mrs. Jess Varnadore of Texon; a half-sister, Mrs. John Durnell of Elkhart; two half-brothers, Monroe McCutchen of Bronte and Frank McCutchen of Gatesville; and 12 grand- children.
