Obituary: Oda Benton, August 1977 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines November 2010 *********************************************************************** The Observer, Robert Lee, Coke County, TX - August 1977 BENTON Services for Oda Benton, 79, were at 10 a.m. Monday in Robert Lee Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Epperson, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Robert Lee Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. Mr. Benton died at 1:28 a.m. Saturday in West Coke County Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born March 18, 1898, in Maypearl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Price Benton. He was a World War I Veteran and at the age of 17 was the first man from Robert Lee to enlist in the U. S. Navy. He and Alice Roberts of Robert Lee were married October 5, 1937, at Colorado City and afterwards moved to Big Spring. They later lived in California for about 20 years and after retiring in 1961, moved to Robert Lee. He was a Methodist. He had lived in Big Spring from 1920 to 1953 working as a home mover. Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Robert Lee; three brothers, Charlie Benton, of Rochester, Washington, Lewis Benton of Marysville, Calif. and S. A.(Pete) Benton of Midland; two sisters, Ruth E. Pierce of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Margaret Terry (Jewel M.) of Chickashaw, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Jim (Lizzie) McCutchen, of Robert Lee.
