She was born on Jan. 28, 1922, in San Angelo to a pioneer ranching couple, Ira A. and Mary Maud Cosby Bird. She was reared in the Sanco community. The Sanco Camp meeting was started when she was 2 years old. She attended Sanco School until her senior year in high school and graduated from Robert Lee High School in 1939. She attended Bob Jones College and later graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in May of 1943. On May 17, 1944, she married Nolan C. Pentecost at the Bird ranch home near Sanco, with the Rev. Joe Temple officiating. She taught school in Bronte and in Robert Lee. She and Nolan ranched on the Casa Blanca Ranch in the Sanco area most of their married lives. They were past members of the Concho Hereford Association, having raised registered Hereford cattle for many years. They were members of the Texas Farm Bureau and Sanco Village Association. She was active in many Christian, conservative and patriotic organizations. Mary Jo was extremely caring, compassionate, loving and helping to many young people with serious problems. She was a member of the First Evangelical Methodist Church of San Angelo for many years. Mary Jo is survived by her husband, Nolan Pentecost; one son, James Bird Pentecost and wife, Kathleen of Sanco; one sister, Evelyn Bird McKinley and her daughter, June Gulley; four grandchildren, Janet Pentecost Zook and husband, Robert Zook, Rachel Pentecost, Michael Pentecost and Travis Pentecost; nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Robert Lee Baptist Church with burial in the Sanco Cemetery. The Rev. Clifford Mayo will conduct the service. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Robert Lee Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Michael Pentecost, Robert Zook, Andrew Boomer, Maurilo Flores, Dr. Alfred Bardeman, Rex Wike, Ron Blaylock and Bill Allen. a memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, at the First Evangelical Methodist Church on Junius Street and Hatcher in San Angelo led by state Rep. Ray Allen of Grand Prairie and possibly others. Friends may send memorials to the Gideons International, First Evangelical Church Sanco Village or Cemetery Association or a favorite charity.
