Maudie worked as an licensed vocational nurse at local hospitals, nursing homes and private duty nursing from 1948 until her retirement from San Angelo State School in Carlsbad at age 70. During the polio epidemic, she cared for iron lung patients at Shannon Hospital. She worked at St. John’s Hospital, Shannon, Sterling City Hospital, local nursing homes, June Petit’s Golden Years Nursing Home in Christoval and also at San Angelo State School (primarily in the men’s dorms) as medications nurse. She never stopped studying and learning how to serve her patients in all the years she worked. She took great pride in successfully passing her State Board Exam in August at the age of 65; thus removing the “waivered” designation from her license. She had many memories of special people she worked with and of her patients. Her “boys” at Carlsbad were very special to her as was Sister Dianacia, her teacher at St. John’s; June Pettit and Dr. Aaron Landy, among many others. She was born in Concho County to James Monroe and Octa Lee Welch Bradley on June 15, 1909. She was married to W.E. Bill Burleson at Tennyson on April 4, 1931. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three daughters, and two grandsons. She is survived by one sister, Ora Thornton of San Angelo; one son, Roy Burleson and wife, Betty, of San Angelo; two daughters, Louise Green and husband, Henry, of Circle, Mo., and Billie Chisum of San Angelo; 12 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandson and a niece and nephew. The family wishes to express very special thanks to the people of DHS, especially her care-giver, Sharon Kendrick; and to everyone at Hospice of San Angelo, especially her nurse, Debbie Bishop. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of San Angelo or to a favorite charity. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in Mule Creek Cemetery in Tennyson with the Rev. Paul Terry Chaplain of Hospice of San Angelo officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson’s Funeral home.
