He was born April 14, 1923 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Ollie Kirkland and Noble Crump Hogue. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Alaska, Korea, & Panama Canal Zone. He completed a law degree from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. After retiring as a Staff Judge Advocate with the rank of Major in 1969 he joined An Haffey in his Oak Cliff law office, but later practiced on his own until his recent retirement. He was the grandson of the late Joe Portis and Nancy Ann Couch Kirkland, early Coke County settlers of 1898. He is survived by two daughters: Gay Lee Kauahi, and husband Kani of Phoenix, AZ and Vancouver, B.C., Canada, and Nancy Roderick and husband Rodney of Dallas; four grandchildren, Kalei Kanahi and wife Nikki, Hana Kauahi, Kamana Kauahi and Brooke Roderick and one great-grandchild, Brelyn Kauahi. Other survivors are his mother, Ollie K. Hogue, of his home in Duncanville, sister, Gay Nell Meyer, Wimberley, three nieces and one nephew, and numerous cousins and friends. A memorial service was held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday September 5, 2000 at the David Clayton & Sons Funeral Home in Duncanville. A Graveside Service and Burial was held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday September 6, 2000 at Fort Chadbourne Cemetery near Bronte, Texas. Family received friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 at David Clayton & Sons Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation, Inc. at Development Department C/O Marc Lichtman 1501 N.W. 9th Avenue Miami, Florida 33136-1494.
