Bobby James, officiating. Interment followed in the City of Levelland Cemetery Mrs. Thornton was born January 17, 1916, in Gunterville, Alabama. She married Newell Thomas Thornton in Lubbock County in 1933. He preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Thornton died on Tuesday, November 14, 2000, at Covenant Hospital in Levelland. She was a lifelong Texas. She had lived in Levelland since 1928, moving from Commerce, Texas. She was a Sunday School teacher at a nursing home in Levelland, for 24 years, since the late 40's. She was awarded for bringing the most people to church. President of the WMA's until she retired, she became a homemaker taking up quilting and embroidery, and reading in her spare time. Survivors include three daughters, Laquita Juanita Stephens of Mira Loma, CA; Margaret Ann Emmons, of Lubbock; and Doris Helen Sims of Bronte. Three sons include Kenneth Royce Thornton of Lubbock; and Elvis Lee Thornton of El Sobrante, CA; and Thomas Gene Thornton of Plainview; brothers Joe Davis, Wes Davis, and Tiny Davis; sisters Anita Davis Glass and Melba (Skeet) Mayfield; 12 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Newell Thomas Thornton, in 1991; a son, Jerry Wayne Thornton, in 1948; a daughter, Nina Ruth King, 1991; brothers Wayne Davis and Edgar Davis; and sister Dorothy Davis.
