Funeral services were held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, February 27, 2001, at First Baptist Church, Blackwell, Texas, with Brother John Curry officiating. Burial followed at Hylton Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Bronte. Mrs. Magness was born November 29, 1902, in Cedar Nob, Texas to James Elbert Childers and Clercy Lee Pillion. She was a Member of the Methodist Church. She married James Newton "Jim" Magness, April 28, 1929 in Drasco. After their marriage, they made their home in the Hylton area as farmers and ranchers. She was a homemaker, an avid cook, a member of the Hylton Home Demonstration Club and the Hylton Quilting Club for many years, and also enjoyed gardening and preserving the fruits of her labor. In later years, she enjoyed watching birds and her soap operas. After her husband's death in 1963, she moved to Bronte and resided there until her death. Her daddy was a school teacher, carpenter, fisherman and blacksmith. They moved many times in her growing up years. She loved to talk about the many places she had lived such as Cedar Nob, Blackwell, Maryneal, Champion, Shep, Mulberry Canyon, Fort Chadbourne and Grassburr, and recalled helping her mother care for her younger brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons, Jessie Magness and wife, Hulene, of Blackwell; Bill Magness and wife, Hazel of Hylton; one sister, Myrtie Ware of Abilene; 8 grandchildren, Joe V. Hicks and wife of Burleson; Gay Kloster of Austin; Lee Magness and wife, Shirley, of Granbury; Sandra Bushore and husband, Michael, of San Antonio; Jan Magness of Bronte; Billy Magness and wife, Janet of Blackwell; Marie Wooten and husband Jim, of Oceanside, CA, and Dean Johnson and wife of Fort Worth; 6 step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great- grandchildren and many nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Magness, her parents, James and Lee Childers; 2 sisters, Vera Buchannan and Wilma McDorman, and 6 brothers, Clifton Crockett, Eldon, Raymond "Slim", Morris, Kenneth, and Grady Childers: 1 son, Valton Hicks and 1 step daughter, Ruby Johnson. Pallbearers were Joe V. Hicks, Lee Magness, Billy Magness, Danny Magness, Michael Bushore and Jerome Hanna. Honorary Pallbearers are Caleb Magness and Mason Magness.
