Wayne was born April 11, 1919, on the divide, already the third generation of a Coke County ranching family, the second son of John Franklin McCabe and Fern Chumley McCabe. His brothers are Victor McCabe and J. F. McCabe Jr. He married Delia Frank (Sitter) Jameson on July 6, 1940, in Pecos. Wayne and Sitter made their ranch home near Silver where they raised their two daughters, Charlotte and Fredda. He actively ranched in Mitchell and Coke counties. Throughout his life he loved ranching, throughout the good and bad times and weathered the change that accompanied the industry. He was an avid horseman and was involved with rodeo, roping, polo and horse racing. Wayne was committed to keeping his community strong and independent through active participation on various boards and organizations. He served as a director on the Robert Lee State Bank Board since 1983. West Coke County Hospital District from 1981-1984, and Coke County Underground Water District from 1990, including a stint as president from 1992 to 2001. He was a member of the Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association, Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. Wayne is survived by his brothers; his daughters; one grandson, David Northcutt; and two great-grandchildren, Celia and Randy Northcutt. Pallbearers were Jeffrey McCabe, Mike McCabe, Jerry McCabe, Todd McCabe, Wade Love, Tye Love, Sam Chumley, Joe Ash and Melvin McCabe. Funeral service was at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Robert Lee Baptist Church with Frank Daniels officiation. Burial followed in McKenzieville Cemetery.
