He married Kary Wilshusen on May 3, 1986, truly a marriage blessed by God. They were blessed with three beautiful children. He was a great husband and was completely devoted to his family. David was a great father, spending a lot of his time with his children, doing homework, coaching or assisting with Little League, supporting and helping the kids with 4-H, and had also served as president of the PTO. He taught his son, Sam, about his love of woodworking. He could see a form in the wood and make it take shape. David was a 4th generation rancher on family land and loved the ranch life, especially the land, the wildlife, and the wildflowers. He was also a county commissioner for Coke County and was honored to hold the position. He was also ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church, in charge of Christian Education, was a member of the Lions Club, Trapper’s Association and was a faithful supporter of West Texas Rehab.
