She was born Dec. 26, 1912, near Gustine, Texas, the seventh of eight children born to Thomas Jefferson McCullough and Maude Elizabeth Eubanks McCullough. Essie was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Melvin Childress; one grandson, Kenny Sheppard; four sisters; and two brothers. She is survived by one sister, Ione Wilson of Dallas; and three daughters, Bonita and husband, Leslie Copeland, of Robert Lee, Juanice and husband, Leonard Herr, of Collierville, Tenn., and Carolyn and husband, Eddie Braswell, of College Station. She leaves behind eight grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Essie was a ranching wife and worked along side her husband for 20 years on the Cortez Russell ranch. She loved gardening and cooking. When her daughters were grown, she studied to be a licensed vocational nurse and worked many years at Coke County Memorial Hospital and later at West Coke County Nursing Home. While husband Melvin was sheriff of Coke County, they lived in the jail and she cared and cooked for prisoners. She was a member of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron. A member of Robert Lee Baptist Church, Essie was a devout Christian and leaves a legacy of love and kindness to her family and countless friends. Memorials may be made to Robert Lee Baptist Church, Robert Lee Care Center and Hospice in care of Vistacare — 940 B Aurora Drive, San Angelo, Texas, 76903. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the Robert Lee Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Robert Lee Cemetery.
