The daughter of J.R. and Ara McManus Mims, she was born May 3, 1907, in Sherwood, Texas. She grew up on the Rocky Ranch about 25 miles from Water Valley. Lonnie, her sister, Robbie and brother, Elton were taught by a governess on the ranch until they were old enough to go to high school. They lived with their grandmother, Molly Richmond Mims while attending San Angelo High School. After graduating from high school in 1924, Lonnie attended CIA in Denton and San Angelo Junior College. In the early 20s, Lonnie’s father bought the Knapp Ranch, northwest of Water Valley in Coke County. This became the home of her father and stepmother, Mary Agnes Demere (Dobbie). Lonnie was married at the ranch to her husband, Paul Coulter, on Sept. 2, 1933. They lived in San Angelo until 1946, while Paul worked for San Angelo National Bank. They then moved to the Knapp Ranch and lived there for the next 44 years. Paul and his brother-in-law, Elton Mims formed a partnership and ranched together until Elton retired in the 70s. Lonnie was a long time member of the Water Valley Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school classes, was president of the Woman’s Society, held several district offices and played the organ and piano for the church. When the Carlsbad Methodist Church needed an organist, Lonnie volunteered. She was the organist for 14 years and started the first Sunday school class there. In the 50s she did volunteer work at the old McKnight Hospital. For two years, she was treasure of the McKnight volunteer council, which consisted of 52 counties and was the Christmas Gift Shop chairperson. She worked with Dr. Frank LaBauch in “The Each one Teach one” method and taught Hispanics to read and write. The Pastoral Care and Counseling Center in San Angelo was one of her great joys. She participated in many studies and seminars. Lonnie was a terrific bridge player and was one of the original members of the Water Valley Bridge Club which organized in the 1920s and still meets regularly. She loved playing card games especially with her grandson, Coulter. She never missed a Cowboy game on television, loved baseball and college football games. While living at the ranch she and her sister-in-law, Marie Mims, started working the jumbles in the paper. When her eyesight failed in later years, you could give her the letters and she could figure out the word without seeing the letters. She was loved and will be missed by her daughter, Kathi Johnson; grandson, Coulter Johnson; and all her nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Coulter; by her two sisters, Robbie Mims Skeete and Helen Mims Sprague; and her brother, Elton Mims. A very special thank you to Lonnie’s extended family, Mandy Sosa and Rose Mijares. They took wonderful care of Lonnie in her later years. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, with the Rev. Charles Williams officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Water Valley Methodist Church and West Texas Boys Ranch.
