Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Robert Lee Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Robert Lee Cemetery. Gladys was born March 18, 1912, to Andrew J. and Georgia Roe in Winters, Texas, and married Joe Slaton on Sept. 6, 1938, in Yuma, Ariz. She worked at Young’s Grocery in Winters before moving to Robert Lee, where she worked as a cook at the West Coke County Hospital until retirement. Gladys and Joe didn’t have children but had enough nieces and nephews who thought of them as their “second parents,” and she was lovingly known as “Auntie.” Gladys had a special love for the church and her family. Her love for life showed in the bounce she always had in her walk. Her favorite pastimes were fishing, camping, playing dominoes and spoiling her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, A.J. and Georgia Roe; her spouse, Joe Slaton on Jan. 18, 1991; and four brothers, Ollie Roe and wife, Alphie, A.J. Roe II, Jirld Lin Roe and Harm Roe. Gladys is survived by two sisters, Bobbie Lee of San Angelo and Juanita Dean and husband, Arthur, of Big Spring; two brothers, Bill Roe and wife, Inez, of Robert Lee, and Don Lee Roe and wife, Sharon, of Abilene; two sisters-in-law, Fay Roe of Robert Lee and Lena Voss of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will always be remembered by her family. The family would like to express their thanks for all the extra care that was given to “Auntie” during her stay at the Robert Lee Care Center.
