A memorial service was held at 3:00 pm Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at Central Baptist Church in Bronte. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home. Garland was born to Andrew Deason Spencer and Ruth Warner Spencer on July 26, 1914 in Fort Chadbourne. He married Mary McCoy, December 24, 1933 at Nolan, Texas. He owned and operated Spencer's Texaco and Feed Store as well as farmed and ranched until his retirement. A longtime resident of Bronte, Garland was a devloted member of Central Baptist Church. In August 2000, he and Mary moved to Roby, Texas to be with their family. Garland is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary McCoy Spencer; his sister, Agnes Walter of San Angelo; his son, Richard Spencer and wife, Kathy of Roby; grandchildren, Ricky Spencer of Coahoma, Reggy and Jennifer Spencer of Roby, Benny and Carol Carreon of Meadow, Danny and Laura Carreon of Roby, Jerry and Kelly Carreon of Gordon, Christie and John Womble of Dallas; great grandchildren, Bailey, Katy and Calvin Spencer, Jerad Wolfe, Jordan and Isabella Carrreon; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his caretaker and beloved friend of three years, Anna Barrea. Pallbearers were Ricky Spencer, Reggy Spencer, Benny Carreon, Danny Carreon, Jerry Carreon, and Earle D. Lewis. The family request that memorials be sent to Hospice of the Big Country or West Texas Rehab Center. Th family would like to express their appreciation to Hospice of the Big Country and caretakers Anna Barrea, Denise Caswell, and Hope Granado for their loving and gentle care.
