ROBERT LEE — Longtime native of Coke County, Cumbie Ivey Sr., 98, passed from this life on Friday, Oct. 29, 2004. Mr. Ivey was born on March 3, 1906, on a farm north of Bronte, Texas, to Oscar and Elizabeth Ivey. He was the youngest of 10 children, nine boys and one girl, who preceded him in death. His wife, Mary Hickman Ivey, and his son, Cumbie Ivey Jr., also preceded him in death in 1999 and 1998, respectively. After his marriage to Mary, the couple lived in Bronte, Ballinger, and San Angelo before moving to Robert Lee in 1944. He was a Ford Dealer in Ballinger until World War II and then moved to San Angelo where he worked on war planes at Mathis Field. Upon the couple’s return to Coke County, they purchased the Ford dealership, now Ivey Motor Company Inc. that remained in the family until its sale in 1998. Mr. Ivey began pursuing his ranching interest in 1957 and was active until his death. Mr. Ivey was a director of the Upper Colorado River Authority (UCRA) for 42 years and was involved in the primary origination and development of many projects of the UCRA during his term. He was one of the directors during the construction of the O.C. Fisher Reservoir and was involved in the cooperative effort of the building of the Twin Buttes Reservoir. Mr. Ivey was a past director of the Robert Lee State Bank and was a member of the Robert Lee Hospital Board that directed the building of the first hospital in Robert Lee. In 1975 he was voted “Citizen of the Year” of Robert Lee and has received many county conservation awards throughout the years as he pursued his ranching interests. Mr. Ivey had been a member of the Robert Lee Baptist Church since 1944, and in his younger years participated on many committees that aided in its growth. Mr. Ivey is survived by his granddaughter, Patti Lynn Petersen, her husband, Terry Petersen of Dallas, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his caregiver of many years, Lita Gonzales; his ranch foreman and wife, Jesus and Matilda Landeros, all of Robert Lee, and his loyal border collie, Scrappy. The family would like to thank the staffs of Shannon Hospital and the Robert Lee Care Center for their wonderful care. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, at the Robert Lee Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Bronte, Texas. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
