Mavis was born on January 23, 1915 in Bradshaw, Texas to R. D. and Claudia Thackston Pounders. She married George Newby on October 30, 1931 in Winters, Texas. They lived in Winters, before moving to Robert Lee in 1968, where they lived until George's death. Mavis remained here for several years before leaving to live with her daughter. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and three sisters. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Bridge Club. Mavis is survived by her daughters, Georga Jones of Ballinger and Ginger Bryan of Harker Heights, Texas; one sister, Mae Goin of Odessa; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Graveside service was held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 10, 2004 at the Robert Lee Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.
