Obituary: Coe Lewis, May 8, 2010 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines June 2010 *********************************************************************** The Observer/Enterprise Friday, May 14, 2010 LEWIS Cora Ella (Coe) Lewis left this earth to be with her Savior on May 8, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents in 1977 and her older sister, Vera Etherage Lightsey of Canandaigua, New York on July 16, 2003, and her baby sister, Mary Gregory of Cumming, Georgia, on December 10, 2008. Coe was born to Levada and Etherage Cobb on December 25, 1919, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was the second child of four girls born to the Cobbs. Coe spent her childhood in Birmingham and was employed by the Ordinance Department when she met and married Lisborn Buford Carlton in 1939. No children were born of this marriage and he is now deceased. He joined the Air Force in 1941 and they were transferred to Miami Beach, Florida, Scranton, Pennsylvania, Montgomery, Alabama, Marianna, Florida, Craig Field in Selma, Alabama, and then to Amarillo Army Air Field in Amarillo, Texas. She worked for the VA Hospital, Graham Plow Co., CAL Western Life Ins. Co., and SIC while in Amarillo. Coe met Leo David Lewis in Amarillo, he worked for the Texas parks and Wildlife Department. They were married in Wichita Falls in 1955 and were transferred to San Angelo in 1961. A son, clay Taylor Lewis, was born to them in Wichita Falls in 1958. Leo had two daughters, Paula Kay and Nancy LeAnn who became Coe's step-daughters and she raised them. After the move to San Angelo, a daughter, Cathy Lynn, was born in 1966. Coe worked as a Civil Service employee twelve years before moving to San Angelo; she went to work at the San Angelo Post Office in 1965 as secretary. In 1978, she served as Officer in charge of the post office in Mason, Texas, where she served until 1980. Coe became the Postmaster at Robert Lee in 1981; she was instrumental in getting a new post office built while serving. She retired in 1987. In 1988, she took over as contractor of Goodfellow Air Force Base Post Office and retired from there on October 30, 2005. She spent many years as a member of American Business Women's Association. Member of Executive board of a Credit Union and a volunteer at Shannon Medical Center since 1988, where she has over 4,000 hours of volunteer service. Coe was very active with two Bunco clubs and had many friends who will miss her. She was a member of the Community Hills Christian Church and Forgiven Ministries. Coe is survived by her son, Clay Taylor Lewis and wife, Cindy of San Angelo; daughter, Cathy Lynn Jackson and husband, David of Gunter, Texas; stepdaughters, Paula k. Smith and husband, Mike of Georgia; Nancy LeAnn Travers and husband, Todd of Alabama; grandchildren, Renee, Eric, and Christopher Jackson of Gunter, Texas, David Lewis and wife Shonette of Kerrville, Texas; step-grandchildren, Danny Smith, David Smith and wife, Cindy of Monticello, Georgia, Alan Eisenbach and wife, Cassidy of Thornton, Colorado, Wolfgang and Max DeLaRossa of San Angelo, Texas, and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation was all day Wednesday and Thursday, May 12 and 13, 2010, with the family present Thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm. Funeral Service will be at 10 am Friday, May 14, 2010, at Grape Creek Baptist Church with Russ Frasier officiating. Burial will follow at Robert Lee Cemetery.
