Obituary: Gladys Waldrop, June 20, 2010 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines August 2010 *********************************************************************** The Observer/Enterprise Friday, June 25, 2010 WALDROP Gladys Waldrop passed from this earthly life on Sunday, June 20, 2010, to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 91. Visitation was all day Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at the funeral home with the family present from 6 pm - 8 pm. Graveside service was held at 10 am Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Hayrick Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral home. Gladys was born on October 15, 1919, the seventh child of James Alexander (Dick) Waldrop and Runie Estelle (Butts) Waldrop who moved to Coke County in 1908, from Lavaca County, Texas. She was born at hayrick about one and one-half miles north of the Old Hayrick town site. Gladys' father was Postmaster from August 8 1913, to April 15, 1915. The Post Office was in their home, the house where she was born, until it was discontinued and the mail was sent out on a route from Bronte to Hayrick and Fort Chadbourne. After her father's death in 1939, her mother and she stayed on the farm and helped take care of the livestock until her mother's death in October 1954. Gladys attended school at Hayrick, Robert Lee, and Bronte, graduating from Bronte High School in 1939. She rode the school bus to Bronte, and was active in sports, playing softball and volleyball in high school. She worked with the 4 H girls for a number of years and was also active in Home Demonstration Club work. Gladys worked for Mr. Porter in the Robert Lee Variety Store until she went to work in the Robert Lee State Bank in 1954, working there twenty-six years until her retirement. After her retirement, she moved to Robert Lee where she resided until she passed away. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Glenn and Barton; her sisters, Edith, Gertie, Norma and Thelma. Gladys is survived by her nieces and nephews, Winona Van Sickle, Billy Warrington, Harvey Warrington, all of San Angelo, Melba maudlin of Robert Lee, Marjorie Gladys Hughes of Midland, David Waldrop of Lubbock, Keith Waldrop of Midland, and Riley Waldrop of Robert Lee. The family would like to thank the Robert Lee Care Center and Hospice of San Angelo for the excellent care they gave Gladys.
