Obituary: Portis Stewart Robbins, August 8, 2011 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines Feb 2012 *********************************************************************** The Observer/Enterprise, Coke County, TX - August 12, 2011 ROBBINS Portis Robbins Our Lord called his faithful servant, Portis Stewart Robbins, to his place in Heaven to reunite with his beautiful wife on Monday, August 8, 2011. He was born to Louis Carroll "Bus" and Jettie Kirkland Robbins on September 20, 1928, at home, in Hayrick, Texas. He graduated from Bronte High School in 1947. He then married the most beautiful woman he had ever met and the love of his life, Mary Lee Davis, on January 1, 1949. After they began their life together, he started his career in the plumbing world. Portis eventually opened Robbins Plumbing shop in San Angelo in 1976 with his sons. Over the span of his plumbing career he had a passion for teaching others the trade. After he retired from plumbing, he found another passion in farming and loved being out on the land that the Lord had provided. He spent hours with his grandchildren on the tractor, in the barn and tending to animals. He truly found peace out on Smokey Valley Ranch and loved that it brought him back to his youth. In the later years of his life, he enjoyed getting up early and making breakfast for his beautiful bride of almost 60 years. Mary had become his world and with her sudden passing in 2008, Portis was ready to go home then. Our great heavenly father allowed us a few more precious years with him before calling him home. Portis was that gentle soul that hardly said a word but, when he did, it always spoke volumes. He will forever be loved and missed by all who knew him. Portis is survived by his five children; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Davis and husband George of San Antonio, Texas; four sons, Portis Samuel "Sam" Robbins and wife Dianne of Richardson, Texas, Preston Carol Robbins and wife Maureen of San Antonio, Texas, Rupert Ray Robbins and wife Becky of DeSoto, Texas, Clifford Edward Robbins and wife Renee of San Angelo, Texas; eleven grandchildren, George "G.W", Tony, Marianne, Lindsey, Cindy, Charlie, Sarah, Kaity, Drew, Delaney, and Stone; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and beloved friends. Visitation was held all day Thursday, August 11, 2011, with family present from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am Friday, August 12, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Bronte. Burial will follow in the Hayrick Cemetery in rural Coke County. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way. The family would like for memorials to be made to the church home of their choice. *************************** Permission granted by The Observer/Enterprise for publication in the Coke County TXGenWeb and/or the Coke County Archives of the USGenWeb.
