Obituary: Louise Walker, June 28, 2013 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines June 2015 *********************************************************************** The Observer/Enterprise, Coke County, TX - July 5, 2013 Louise Walker passed from this life into the heavenly arms of her Lord and Savior on June 28, 2013, at the age of 96 years and 20 days at the Robert Lee Care Center where she had resided for four years. Louise the youngest of four daughters was born in Mason County on June 8, 1917, to Dan Grote and Amanda Brockman Grote. She attended school in Mason. She moved to San Angelo around 1938, where she met and became best friends with Mary Jacobs Brod, who introduced her to her cousin Roy Walker. Louise and Roy were married on December 8, 1944. Roy was serving in the U.S. Army at the time of their marriage and was later shipped to Okinawa, Japan, with the combat engineers. He was honorably discharged in February 1946 and returned home to his wife and a baby daughter, Mary Beth. They resided for awhile in Colorado City before moving to Silver in 1947 where Roy farmed until the drought of the 1950's brought him to work in the oil fields. Roy and Louise lived at Silver until 1963 when they moved to Robert Lee. Louise worked at Sun Grocery in Silver for Vaughan Davis, then at Baker's Grocery in Robert Lee, after their move to town. Louise was an excellent seamstress and sewed for the public for many years. She made her daughter's wedding dress for her marriage to Wayland Drennan in April 1966. The greatest joy in Louise's life came from becoming a grandmother and great-grandmother. She took great pride in her "kids" and always supported them in their activities and lives. And, they loved their "Gigi"! Louise was a lifelong Methodist and proud of her German ancestry. Her great-grandfather, Rev. Charles A. Grote, was the first circuit riding Methodist Minister in the Hill Country of Texas. His German bible and songbook are owned by Mary Beth. Louise was very active in her church as long as her health permitted. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, was a member of UMW, served in the kitchen, and served many years as communion steward. She assisted in the communion offered to residents of Robert Lee Care Center during the worship services brought by her pastors, baking the bread for the service. Louise was very active in the auxiliary at R.L.C.C. Along with Pauline Vaughan she helped establish the gift shop at the center and made many friends with the staff and residents. She also helped pass the juice cart for the residents. She is survived by her only child, Mary Beth and her husband Wayland Drennan of Robert Lee; grandchildren, Rick and Katie Drennan, Debra and Ernest Harne; great-grand-children, Kodi and Corbin Drennan, and James and Chelsea Wyatt and Skyler Horne, all of Robert Lee.
