Obituary: Florene C. Oates, October 22, 2015 Contributed by Brenda Scott Hines 1-11-2016 *********************************************************************** San Angelo Standard Times October 24 2015 Florene C. Oates, 91, of San Angelo, joined her Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 22, 2015. She passed peacefully from this earth at home surrounded by her family. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the funeral home with family present 3-5 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 26, 2015 at Lifepoint Baptist Church with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way. Florene was born November 18, 1923 in Robert Lee, Texas to Willard and Edna Caudle. She grew up on a dairy farm in Runnels County and graduated from high school in Norton, Texas.On March 4, 1944 she married the love of her life, Verlin Oates in a double wedding ceremony in Ballinger, Texas. They were blessed to spend sixty-five years together before Verlin was called home in 2009. Together they had one daughter, Mary Keele. Florene was active as a mother. She was involved with PTA and served as president of the PTA at Lake View when Mary was a student. She was also a chaperone on numerous chieftain band trips. She later went to work as a clerk at GTE. She retired from there in 1982 after twenty-five years of service. Florene loved sewing, gardening and cooking. Pecan pies and backstrap were among her specialties. Florene was a devout Christian and loved her church. She was active member of Lifepoint Baptist Church since 1945. She taught Sunday school for many years, as well as involved with the youth and was a camp counselor. She was also a member of the choir. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents and a niece, Glenda Jean Caudle. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Keele and husband Lee of San Angelo; granddaughters, Tammy Chambers and Mary Lee Bailey and husband Zeke all of San Angelo; great grandchildren, Jessica Chambers of Austin, Jonathan Brannan and Shelby of Houston, Joshua Chambers and J'Ann of San Antonio, Stacia Torres and Chris of Miles, Janna Chambers, John David Chambers and Cameron Bailey all of San Angelo; four great-great grandchildren, Gracyn, Yzabella, Ryan and Paxton. She is also survived by her brother, J.W. Caudle and his wife Sue and nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice for their care during her short illness.
