He was born on December 23, 1946 in Coleman, TX. While proudly serving in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, Van earned the Bronze Star aboard the USS Waddell. After his military service Van owned and operated Vanco Heavy Lift that is still operated and family owned. Van was a frequent and generous contributor to both San Pedro and Wilmington communities. Van will be dearly missed by his loving family. Van is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Mattie A. Hicks; sons Van Alin Hicks III and Cory Hicks; daughters, Rebecca Hicks of San Pedro and Tiffany (Hicks) Ortiz of Tustin. Also survived by three sisters, one brother and three grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2007, 12:00 p.m. at McNerney's Mortuary Chapel.
