He was my 3rd grgrandfather. Vicki Shaffer wire@shaffer.com McKinney, Texas Jan. 5th, 1861 Dear Children: We were gratified to hear you were all well. We are all in good health except myself and my health has improved since I last wrote to you. The Legislature meets on the 21st. I design going as under the direction of my physician as he thinks it will improve my health. Mother has recovered her health. Her hand is well but she can't use it as before . Harberger is living in a half mile of us. We are anxious for you all to come and spend next summer with us. Times are very hard here , money scarce and property has gone down at least 25 per cent in the last year, - wheat is now selling at $1.50 , corn $1 - oats 50 cents, pork 7 1/2 lb., but few land sales. Politics run high here. I am opposed to leaving the Union till an effort to have our rights respected is made in the union. If this fails I hope the Southern States will go out in mass. I hope the ___ government will not attempt to coerce a single state for that would involve the nation in civil war which is more to be dreaded than pestilence and famine. I will write you again from Austin. Yours Truly, Sam A. Bogart
