When this inventory was made in December, 1973, we were able to locate 199 gravesites. 0ur search was careful, diligent and exacting. However, because of the overgrown condition of the cemetery it is possible that we have missed some markers. Also it is highly likely the cemetery contains graves that for various reasons were never marked. Over the years this cemetery, which served as Farmersville's first public burying grounds has suffered seriously from both natural neglect and vandalism. The Honaker-Murchison graveyard originally contained many more graves. In 1899 when the IOOF Cemetery was established on the northwest edge of Farmersville local families who could afford to do so had the, bodies of their kin moved to the new location. Of those left at the old site about half were children, one was a former Union soldier, and one a former slave. It is likely that other blacks were buried here because the graveyard was opened before the era of Jim Crow segregation. The list that follows indicates graves with inscribed gravestones and those clearly marked in some way as graves but lacking inscriptions. Grave numbering in this list corresponds with those on the diagrams that accompany the inventory. We have endeavored to include all bioographical information contained on each marker. The Honaker graveyard. Although the deed for this cemetery was recorded March 31, 1882, the earliest identifiable grave in this section dates from 1870. The first grave in this list is located in the southwest corner of the cemetery. Information in [ ] has been added by Tammy Huffman or Mary Love Berryman. 1. Martha A., wife of W.A. Bryant, b. On August 14, 1880 Alex Murchison donated these two acres of his farm "for benefit of the public as a cemetery." This was used as a place of burial before that date and may have evolved from a private family cemetery. The oldest grave on this side with an inscription dates from 1860. Our grave numbering on this side is less orderly because dense brush and briar tangles prevented our locating some gravestones during our initial effort, These were included as we discovered them.
