Collin Co., TX - Cemeteries - Old Plano Cemetery *********************************************** This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Julie Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgenwebarchives.org *********************************************** Cemetery Name: Old City Alternative names: Old Plano, Pioneer, Douglas Community, McElvain, and Plano Pioneer Location: Between Avenue H and Avenue I at the block of 11 And 12th streets Land owner/steward: North portion owned by city of Plano. The southern portion is maintained by Ben Thomas and the Plano Cemetery Association. Time span: 1881 – Present Status: Active Old City Cemetery (1881-present): Joseph K. Klepper obtained his Peters Colony land grant and designated a portion of the property as a cemetery prior to 1848. Over the years, the Klepper family first gave cemetery plots to individuals, but late sold them. However, the first cemetery plot was not sold until 1882. Part of the reason for the lack of deed records may be the marriages of the Kleppers with other early Plano families. Klepper and his wife, Nancy, deeded a portion of their land adjacent to the cemetery to the Methodist Episcopal Church, the earliest Methodist church in Plano, in 1874. The church building is no longer present but was in use until 1894 (Blackwood and Olivier n.d.; Wells 1985c). The earliest death dates recorded on a marker in the cemetery are June 20, 1873, Sallie F. McFarlin and July 1879 for Robert T. McFarlin. These names and dates are listed on the monument for their mother, Sallie E. McFarlin, who died in 1892. However, family Bible records indicate that these children died outside Collin County, and it is not certain if they are buried elsewhere or if their graves were relocated to the Old City Cemetery (Blackwood and Olivier n.d.). The earliest death date on gravestones of individuals known to have been interred in the cemetery is 1881, a year in which several individuals died. These include Samuel A. Peters, William J. Young, A.J. Barron, Sarah E. Barron, George T. Wright, and Edna Byers (Blackwood and Olivier n.d.;Pitts et al. 1975). The region where the cemetery is located grew into an African American neighborhood after the Methodist church moved, and the cemetery has accepted African American interments since the 1925 burial of Judith Sherrill. The cemetery has since been utilized by the African American community (Blackwood and Olivier n.d. Wells 1985c). andi it is said that this was the only cemetery available to the black community for many years (Ben Thomas, personal communication 2000: State Historical Marker Text 1980). Early pioneers and their descendants are buried in this cemetery. Peters Colonists R.H. Brown, Joseph K. Klepper, William Beverly, and Fountain J. Vance are interred in the Old City Cemetery, as are early settlers Alexander M Lyles, and Pembroke Lyles. Two of Plano’s first physicians, W.R. Stansell and Henry M. Beaty, are also buried here. Other notable interments include R.H. Crawford, who was mayor of Plano 1914-1915, and Claude Mayes, who was a city alderman 1921-1922. In addition, African American community leaders, their relatives, and descendants of pioneers are interred in the cemetery. Members of the Drake family, as well as the Sanders, Stimpson and Thomas families are represented (Blackwood and Olivier n.d.Pitts et al.1975; Wells 1985c). Description of cemetery and landscape/architectural features: The cemetery is a grassy area of over 3 acres. It contains both marked and unmarked burials that are arranged in rows which run North and South. Over 200 burials are in the cemetery. Burial markers include both professionally manufactured monuments and homemade markers. Concrete or wood curbs distinguish a few family lots. A few trees are present, but generally are located along the fence line. The northern portion of the cemetery is surrounded by a six foot chain link fence, and entrances are present at the northern portion of the west fence and eastern portion of the north fence. No gate is present on the north entrance. An unlocked, open gate is present at the west entrance. Relationship to surroundings: The cemetery is in a residential area and is surrounded by houses and two small churches on the east, north, and west sides. The Douglass Community Center (Ben Thomas Center) is across Avenue H to the west. Railroad tracks are present to the south, and a power plant lies directly southeast of the tracks.
