He is active, bright of eye and alert of mind at 93 and has unfailing good humor. “I feel pretty good most of the time” replied T. P. “Ky” Helms said Monday when he visited The Record to renew his subscription. “My feet are the only thing that give me any trouble, I think they have a little arthritis.” He had been a regular subscriber since The Record started publication in 1902. Born November 29, 1873 on a farm near Weston, Texas, Mr. Helms moved on January 17, 1895 to the farm where he has since lived. He is wiry, lithe and erect in posture. His leathery features tell a story of a life spent in the outdoors. He no longer farms his own land, turning it over a few years ago to Ted Cave to run. He has only one milk cow and 17 or 18 sheep he takes care of. He drives a Model A Ford sedan which he said he bought slightly used from a used car dealer, Bob McCoy in 1930. How’s it running he was asked. “Aw, you know how cars are,” he replied. He said his grandfather, Thomas H. Helms came to the area in 1844, being one of the first white settlers in the county. The pioneer once killed an Indian with the Indian’s own tomahawk. Mr. Helms had said his grandfather had told him about how abundant game once was in the county. He told me that not long after he came to Texas, he had killed a total of 900 deer between the months of January and September. He killed them for the hides. Mr. Helms has two children, R. W. Helms of Canton, Ohio, a retired steel company executive and Mrs. D. L. Stiles of Celina, Texas. His first wife and mother of the two children is dead and he is now living with his second wife.
