LLOYD R. McCARTY of Celina, Collin County, Texas, and Pvt. John Marks Jr. of San Diego, Calif., ordered to take two German prisoners captured in the fighting at Salerno, Italy, back to headquarters, arrived instead with thirty-two prisoners. The two privates from the 36th Division were escorting the first prisoners captured during the siege of an important height overlooking the road to Rome. While making their way to the rear, McCarty saw a German sitting behind some bushes. The German was preparing to take aim with his rifle, but McCarty grabbed his rifle and beat him to the shot. He wounded the German slightly and took him prisoner. Before long, one of the prisoners said something aloud in German and two more Germans came out of the trees, surrendered themselves, and fell in line. Every few steps, the German would speak up and a few more would come walking out of the bushes, hands held high overhead. All in all, Marks and McCarty presented thirty-two Germans to their commanding officer at the end of their trip. McCarty, the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. N. McCarty of Celina, entered the service on January 28, 1941. His brother, Newton, is a private first class with an air corps unit stationed somewhere in Italy. The two have not met in Italy as yet.
