Gen. Carl Rogers Darnall, U.S.A., retired, died today in the Walter Reed Hospital at the age of 73. He was credited with originating liquid chlorination of water. General Darnall was commander of the Army Medical Center in Washington from 1929 to 1931. He received the Distinguished Service Medal and saw service in the Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, Boxer Rebellion and World War. He was born in Weston, Texas, the son of Joesph Rogers and Mary Ellen Thomas Darnall. General Darnall studied at Carlton College, Bonham, Texas, and Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky., received a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1890, and was graduated from the Army Medical School in Washington in 1897. In 1896 he was commissioned a first lieutenant and assistant surgeon in the Army. General Darnall was made a colonel in 1917 and a brigadier general on Dec. 5, 1929, retiring on Dec. 31, 1931. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Medical Association and Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. General Darnall belonged to the Army and Navy Country Club. In 1892 he married Annie Estella Major of Erwinna, Pa. They had three sons, Joseph Rogers, William Major and Carl Robert Darnall.
