[Born January 5, 1916; died October 14, 1932] The pale horse and its rider came through the Melissa community last week and dashed away with one of our finest girls. Mary Edna was born and has lived her short life near Melissa. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. G. S. [W.] PORTER, one of Melissa's finest families. Mary Edna was ill for about three months, but seriously ill for about thirty minutes before she died. She lived as quietly as she died. I have never known a finer young Christian. She would have been seventeen years old next January. This seems like a very short life, yet these years were lived well. We would do well to read the words of Gertrude Curtis when a young person goes away. "I cannot always know and understand The Master's rule; I cannot always do the tasks He gives; But I am learning with His help to solve Them one by one; And when I cannot understand, I say, "Thy will be done." Mary Edna graduated from the Melissa High School last spring. She was one of the best in her class. Her school work was excellent. All the pupils loved her. Her teachers loved her. She was diligent in her work at home, at school and at church. She was converted at Melissa in the summer of 1927, and joined the B aptist church at that place. Since that time she has been a consistent Christian. She was regular in Sunday School and B. T. S. as well as all the preaching services. While on earth Mary Edna served the Savior she had trusted. Now she is with that same Jesus in Heaven. Her trials, temptations, and sorrows are all over and she has entered into the "Joys of her Lord." Gone to be with Christ forever. I think the words of Katherine Purvis were Mary Edna's last words. "Oh, loving hand, when shadows deepen fast, And in the gloom, I hear death's billows foam, Draw me so near my eyes rest at the last Upon the face of Him who bears me home." Her Pastor, R. L. BONNER
