Born Oct. 3, 1920, in Electra to Fitzhugh Lee and Tompie (Harvey) Huffman, she graduated from Electra High School and from North Texas State Teacher’s College with a B.S. degree. Later, she received her M.S. degree from East Texas State University. On July 20, 1941, she wed her beloved G.W. Tillerson in Waurika, Okla.; they were blessed with 67 years of marriage. Hospitality flowed endlessly as friends and family gathered to share one of her delicious meals. A member of Bethel Baptist Church in Celina, she taught her “ladies in waiting” Sunday school class for many years. She taught school throughout Texas for 39 years. Students in Celeste, Melissa, Christoval, Sterling City, Electra, Iowa Park, Arp, and Prosper benefited from her classroom attention and even more from the love she shared outside the classroom. Bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, English, and general business skills learned under “Mrs. T” helped many students decide to pursue business careers; even more became teachers because of her influence. Her typing and shorthand students won numerous district and regional UIL titles and some state championships. She and G.W. continued to support students through scholarships. Helen is survived by her husband, G.W. Tillerson, of Greenville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Nancy Tillerson of Irving and Joe and Ruth Tillerson of Arlington, Va.; grandsons and their families Jeffrey, Leslie and Bailey Tillerson of Irving, Jim and Julie Tillerson of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jay, Anne, Ashley, and Blake Tillerson of North Richland Hills; a brother, Aldan and wife Wanda Huffman of Palisade, Colo.; five nieces and nephews, Byron Huffman, Mike Huffman, Sandra Redden, Wayne Pruitt, and Cynthia Ferguson; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Louise Powers. She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Tillerson. Funeral services are Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 8382 County Road 128 near Celina. Rev. Bob Layman and Rev. Cliff Lester will officiate. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Turrentine, Jackson, Morrow Funeral Home in Celina.
