Leon Broughton in July 2001 The Rock Bluff Cemetery is located about 6 miles west of Del Leon, Texas, from FM 587 turn right on dirt road marked Rock Bluff Church. (18 miles from Comanche, and 2.3 miles north of the junction of FM 2247 and FM587) The Church is located near the cemetery which is about one-fourth mile south from the Church. The original Rock Bluff Baptist Church was located nearer the cemetery. The Church was moved to present site where it still stands and is actively used by the Church members. In an interview with Rev. Frank Skaggs, who was pastor of the Church in 1962, I was informed the Rev. Skaggs was just three years old when the Church was organized. At that time he was 89 making the Church about 86 years old, being organized in 1879. Rev. H. Frank Skaggs being born in 1877. He stated that the cemetery was started a little before the Church. In 1975 and 1979, there was a primitive road leading from the Church yard toward the Cemetery, but this road is no longer in existence. The old barbed wire fence which original enclosed the cemetery was down in 1979 and many of the stones were overturned by livestock. In 1979, M. Leon Broughton, Scoutmaster of Troop 35 of Dublin, Texas, took the Scout Troop to Rock Bluff Cemetery for a restoration project. The following listing of graves, grave inscriptions and dates were taken from survey made in 1979, and from the records kept by the ROCK BLUFF BAPTIST CHURCH, and from record of Rock Bluff Cemetery compiled by Margaret & Samuel J.C. Waring in 1976. The numbers shown is this listing are the grave sites on the Church Records submitted to me be Mrs. W.C. Robinett. Inscriptions are from actual grave stones as listed by M. Leon Broughton and the boy scouts, and from pictures made in 1979. Additional information is from "BROUGHTON MEMOIRS". Native stone (sand rock) was used and numbers placed on the rock to identify the graves. The numbered listing of graves was made in 1964 by M. Leon Broughton, who still has the handwritten list. The rock makers were believed to have been made by Rev. Frank Skaggs, who placed the numbers on them. It is good that this list was preserved since other listing of graves has been lost. GRAVE LISTING The first grave was that of a Walker. There are many native sand stone markers, indicating graves, but no identification. Earliest Grave: S.B. WAKER, March 8, 1878 The inscriptions on the graves was taken in 1979 and later checked against the pictures made in 1979 and in July 2001. The last grave was that of: E.M.
