Comanche Chief Dec 8, 1961

J.W. (Jodie) Smith, widely known Comanche rock mason, died at 8:30 o'clock
Monday night, Dec. 4, at the home of his son, Ory Smith, 708 S. Pearl.  Mr.
Smith died suddenly, presumably from a heart attack.

Funderal services for Mr. Smith, 77, were conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday
afternoon, Dec 6 at the Oak Lawn funderal Home Chapel in Comanche, with Rev.
Henry M. Chambers, pastor of the local First Baptist Church officiating.

Singers were Mrs. Inzer Creek, Mrs. Joe Mddleton, O.E. Rippetoe and Robert
Eaton, accompanied by Mrs. Alvin Hafford, organist.

Burial was in Rock Church cemetery, near Blanket.

Pallbearers were Truman Hall, Bill McNutt, George Bonser, Ted Bonser, Ben
Wilhelm, and Luther Harkins.

Mr. Smith, born Jan. 2, 1884 in Alabama, was the son of the late David C. Smith
and Lllie Elizabeth White Smith.  He came to Texas on January 15, 1898 and had
since made his home here.  He was converted early in manhood, and was a member
of the Rock Church Baptist Church.

Mr. Smith was married December 29, 1909 to Cora Belle Edwards and to this union
3 sons were born, one of whom passed away in infancy.  A foster son, Garland D.
Phifer, was taken their into home when he was 9 months old and was reared to
young manhood.  He passed away when he was 22 years of age.

Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Ory Smith of Cmanche and Aubery Smith of San
Angelo; two brothers, Willie Smith of Comanche, and L.B. Smith of Ballinger; a
sister, Mrs. Pearl Wilhelm of Fayettefille, Arkansas; 8 grandchildren and 8
great-grandchildren.
