Small, aged 66 years, City of Many, Sabine Parish, LA. Known A. S. Wheeler since May 1862 until surrender at Vicksburg in July 1863. He served as Private in Company B, 17th Louisiana Regiment. Nash, aged 79 years, living City of Many, Sabine Parish, LA. Know A. S. Wheeler since he was mustered into my company in May 1862; he enlisted and performed the duties of a soldier in Company B, 17th La. S. Wheeler age 74, born Marion County, Tennessee. Reside R.F.D. #2, Whitesboro, Cooke Co, Texas. Lived in Texas since January 1873, not able to engage in occupation. Volunteered from Sabine Parish, LA and was sworn in at New Orleans, LA. Served as a private from 29 March 1862 until the surrender at Vicksburg 4 July 1863, Company B, 17th Louisiana Regt, Infantry. “Was for a while in S. D. Lee’s brigade, but was finally transferred to Baldwin’s brigade, and was surrendered as a member of Baldwin’s brigade at Vicksburg.” [Signed] A. S. Wheeler Wits: P. P. Wilkins, J. Jarrell 6 September 1917, Cooke Co, TX, Declaration of Indigent Widow, Sarah E Wheeler age 69, born Carroll County, Georgia, states she is the widow of A. S. Wheeler who died 2 September 1917, in the county of Bowie, Texas; that she has not remarried. Married 27 September 1866, Polk County, Georgia. Resided in Texas since 1873; Cooke Co. since 1873. Address is RFD 1, Whitesboro, Texas. Husband drew pension; File No. 20294. Husband’s command originally organized in Louisiana, believes Company I, 17th LA Regt, Infantry, enlisted about the beginning of the war, served until the surrender of Vicksburg. [Signed] Sarah E. Application for Mortuary Warrant states A. S. Wheeler died on 2 September 1917 at the home of his son J. I. Wheeler in Texarkana, Texas. Informant was Sarah E. Wheeler, Wife, living Callisburg, Cooke County, Texas “that my post office address is Whitesboro, Texas R #1”. [Signed] Sarah E. Wheeler Certificate of Undertaker Paul Reverra states A. S. Wheeler died in Texarkana, Bowie County, Texas on 2 Sept 1917. “That said body was prepared for burial by me on the 3d day of Sept 1917. Tex 13 October 1917: Mortuary Warrant, Callisburg, Texas, Oct 13th, 1917 to Mrs. Sarah E. Wheeler, Whitesboro, Texas, R#1. Itemized Account lists: “To Reverra-Fewell Undertaking Company, 1 casket and box $75.00 “To above account for Thirty and No/100 Dollars is just, due and unpaid. [Signed] Mrs. Sarah E. Wheeler” 26 October 1917: Letter from Wheeler & Wheeler, Attys enclosing application for Mortuary Warrant in favor of Mrs. Sarah E. Wheeler of Cooke Co, TX. 8 September 1943: Letter or summation of record [not addressed to anyone] “The records show that A. S. Wheeler, private and sergeant, Company B, 17th Louisiana Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted May 11, 1862, and that he was captured July 4, 1863, at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and paroled in hospital at that place, date not stated. No later record of him has been found.” 4 October 1944: Certified Copy Death Certificate in file stated Sarah E. Wheeler had lived 2407 – 10th St, Lubbock 8 years prior to death. Female, White, Widowed, dob 13 Dec 1847 in Georgia. Name of father “- --- Wilkins”. Father’s pob, name of mother, mother’s pob “Don’t Know”. Signature “Mrs. Mattie Blair”. Attending physician E. L. Hunt stated he attended deceased from 1937, last saw alive on 12 June 1944; cause of death was Chron Myocarditis, Generalized arterio-sclerosis. 28 September 1944: Invoice to Mrs. G. W. Blair “For Complete Funeral Services rendered to Mrs. S. E. Wheeler $372.50” [No place of burial indicated]. 26 June, 1947, Letter of Inquiry date stamped by State Comptroller, Austin, Texas. “Route 4 Box 957, Waco, Texas, June 26, 1947 Dear Sir: I would like to know the where abouts of; Mrs. S. E. Wheeler. The last we heard, she was living at, Silvertown, Texas, with her daughter; Mrs. Mattie Blair. She drew a Civil War pension. Would like to know whether she is still living or dead. If she is dead where is she buried. I am one of her grand daughter. My name were Mary Louise Wheeler. My name now is Mary Louise Abraham. [Signed] Mrs. Mary Louise Abraham 30 June 1947, letter from Geo. H. Sheppard, Comptroller of Public Accounts, to Mrs. Mary Louise Abraham, stating Mrs. S. E. Wheeler died 28 September 1944 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Blair of 2407 – 10th Street, Lubbock, Texas. Buried at Lubbock, Texas by Bryan McDonald & Son Funeral Home, Lubbock. Age at death 96 years, 9 months and 13 days. Born December 13, 1847. Cause of death was due to old age.
