VIOLET M. BAIRD

	Violet M. Baird, 81, of 1900 O’Neal, Gainesville, died Thursday in 
Gainesville Memorial Hospital.  No services are planned.  Cremation will be 
followed by burial in New Hope Cemetery, Burns City, under the direction of 
Vernie Keel Funeral Home.
	She was born Feb. 16, 1910, in Crosby to August and Emma Peterson 
Mattson.  After graduating from high school in West Columbia, she earned her 
bacherlor’s and master’s degrees from Rice University and a bachelor’s degree in 
library science from Louisiana State University.  She married John Porter Baird 
April 11, 1941, in Lubbock; he preceded her in death Feb. 24, 1986.  Her 
distinguished career included positions as librarian at Texas Tech University, 
Baylor University and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  A 
member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, the Medical Library Association, Texas 
Library Association and Dallas County Library Association, she was listed in 
“Who’s Who in the South and Southwest” in 1969 and “Who’s Who of American Women” 
in 1970-71.  She received the Murray Gottlier Award for Best Essay on American 
Medical History in 1971.  Mrs. Bairs was a published author with several 
writings to her credit prior to retiring in1972.
	She is survived by her sister Clara Warren of Kenner, La., and niece 
Mary Baird of Gainesville.
