Newland Thursday, October 10, 1991 Service for Cecil B. Newland, 85, of 1300 Magnolia, Gainesville were held today at 2 p.m. in the Vernie Keel Chapel with Dr. Harry Roark, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church, and Dr. Bennie Slack, First Baptist Church pastor, officiating. Mr. Newland died Tuesday afternoon in Gainesville Memorial Hospital. He was born Aug. 16, 1906, in Denison to Bascom E. and Bertha Wininger Newland. He married Grace Jennings June 1, 1926, in Madill, Oklahoma. Mr. Newland was owner-operator of Newland Furniture Company for 35 years. Active in the First Baptist Church, he was a member of Gainesville Masonic Lodge #210, Masonic chapter and council, Shrine, and an organizer and charter member of the Gainesville Lion's Club. He recently was desig- nated a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lion's Club International Foundation in recognition of his commitment to serving the world community. Surviving are his wife Grace Newland of Gainesville; daughters Joyce Fisher of Benham, Joann Cravens of Nederland and Jean Blagg of Lewisville; sister Ruth Ertel of Denison, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church Hymnal Fund. Pallbearers were Jim Blagg, Jeff Blagg, Randy Blagg, John Fisher, Joe Cravens and Chris Covey. Honorary bearers were Bill Graham, Fred Mitchell and Joe Hopfer. (Mr. Newland's mother, Bertha Wininger Newland, was my mother's cousin.)
