Day, 94, who died at her home in the Whitson Community near Moody, were held in the Moody First Baptist Church, of which she was a charter member. Burial was in Moody Cemetery. Mrs. Day was born in a log house near her present home, which was built in 1914. The daughter of Frederick Miller Grimes and Elmira Susan Farley Grimes, she was the tenth of eleven children. An older sister, Nancy Ellen, was the first white child born in Coryell County. Her father was wounded in the Battle of San Jacinto, and an uncle, Jesse Grimes, was killed in the siege of the Alamo. [NOTE: Jesse Grimes was actually no kin to this Grimes family. He was from the English Grimes line, and we were from the German Grimes (originaly Greim)] The Grimes families were among the earliest settlers of the Stephen F. Austin Colony. They came to Texas from Tennessee in 1825 and received land grants in Grimes and Coryell Counties. Grimes County was named for the family. [NOTE: incorrect. Grimes County was named for the "other" Grimes family] Mrs. Day is survived by two sons, Ernest Day of Waco, and Charles M. Day of Galveston; seven grandchildren, sixteeen great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
