M. BROWN DEAD Capt. J. M. Brown, a prominent citizen of our county died at the home of his son, Dr. R. J. Brown, near Ruth, on December 31st, and was interred in the City Cemetery at this place by the Masonic Lodge on the following day. Capt. Brown was one of the early settlers of this county. He came to Texas when a mere boy from Tennessee in 1855 and located near Straws Mill where he lived on his farm until a short time before his death when he went to live with his son, in order to be where he could receive close medical attention. At the time of his death Capt. Brown was 72 years of age. He was a good citizen, a neighbor greatly beloved, and honored by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his death ten children besides a host of friends. We hope for an early issue to have in hand an appropriate and full obituary. The bereaved relatives have our sympathy. F. Brown died Monday, Nov. 13. In the Baptist hospital in Waco. Scott funeral directors conveyed the body and prepared for burial which took place, Tuesday afternoon at 8 o'clock in the Masonic cemetery. Mr. Brown was a native Texan having been born Jan. 14, 1866 on a farm in the Ewing community near the present family home. He spent his life in that community and had acquired large farming interests. About forty years ago he became a member ot the Church of Christ and the religion of the Bible was given right-of-way in his home and life. The church at Ruth has lost one of its most influential members. in the community he was known for his willingness to serve his fellow man. In speaking of his life Revs. J. P. Sprott of Killeen and J. W. Dunn of Gatesville who conducted the funeral, said many words of appreciation of his life and offered it as an example for others to live by. All who knew him could truthfully say, "Mr. Brown was a good man." Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Viola Clary whom he married Nov. 30, 1890 and three sons, Frank, Turk and Juber. One son, Lee, died in early youth. There are also three brothers: W. L. Brown of Ewing, R. J. Brown and Dr. Reb Brown of Gatesville, one half brother, Charlie Brown of Ewing and three half sisters, Mrs. Millard Powell of Ewing, Mrs. John Mounce of Gatesville and Mrs. John Holt and Mrs Ellie Edwards of Flatt. (the paper has Ellie Edwards, but I know this was Roberta Narcissus Brown/Edwards) ----------------------------------------------------------- MR. G. F. BROWN Mr. George Franklin Brown, better known as Juber Brown, was born January 14, 1966 near Straws Mill about six miles southeast of Gatesville, where he lived until his marriage. His mother died when he was about six years of age. His schooling was in the Old Board School House four miles southeast of Gatesville, at Pleasant Grove, Farmer's Springs and Gatesville schools. Mr. Brown and his brother, Mr. Bill Brown, bought a gin at Farmer's Springs, November 26, 1887, and there owned and operated it twenty-nine years. The bought a threasher in 1867 and operated it the remaining years. He made a success during that time of farming. He was married to Miss Mary Viola Clary November 30, 1890 and moved near the gin on ----Creek. Their four children were born at that place; their names are as follows: Alva Lee, who died - when about four years of age, Frank, Turk and Juber. The family built a new home nine miles east of Gatesville in 1906 and were residing there at the time of his death. He became a member of the Church of Christ in Farmer's Springs in 1898. The church was later moved to Ruth where Mr. Brown took an active part as one of the leaders. He was at the Lord's Day Worship every Sunday unless prevented by sickness or real bad weather. He put the Lord and His work first and above everything else. Mr. Brown, one of the fathers of the Ewing school served as trustee for twelve years and was -------then but ill health prohibited his acceptance. He was the organizer of the Ewing Ex-student association and attended every meeting, offering his hand and purse for any assistance that was needed, and always said "I am for You." He worked several years towards the organization of a high school graduating class exercise and in 1925 succeeded; also gave a medal---- and----the highest grade-----was at the opening of our schools with a good speech, unless prevented by sickness. This good citzen's health began to fail him in 1918 with mastoid head trouble. He survived the operation of 1918 and 1925 and lived a very active life, working part of the time. But he had a sever attack with irritated throat in the fall of 1933. His brother's physician advised him to go to a sanitarium where he could be treated with the best of care. He went to the Waco Baptist Sanitarium Wednesday, November 8, strong enought to walk to the car and wave his handkerchief to the children, just as far as could be seen. he wasin a general run down condition growing weaker all the time. A blood transfusion was given him and everhting psssible that tender hands could do, but the Father took him to his Heavenly Home at one-thirty o'clock, Monday, November 12, 1933. The home of Mr. Brown was crowded with friends and loved ones, to greet with sympathy, the broken hearted family, as they brought his body in at nine o"clock that night. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock in the Gatesville Masonic cemetery, by Rev. Sprott, of Killeen, assisted by Rev. Dunn of Gatesville. The large crowd and beautiful floral offerings expressed the sympathy andlove of the countless friends. The active pallbearers were: Troy Jones, J. W. Bates, Ira Glass, Faty Cummings, Clayton Powell, Milton Powell, Mr. Vick and Carl Eubanks. He was loved by all who knew him because of his smooth temper, plain ways, ever ready hand in need of help in anyway for the cause of right; was thoughtful of the crippled, invalid, orphans, widows and aged by little gifts, words of cheer and assisting hand. He was emotional and humble, often breaking down and weeping at times when his heart was so touched and tender. He was a kind, true and loving husband, father and friend. It has been said more than once that there had never been a cross word between he andhis companion. They went hand in hand agreeing in everything. He leaves his wife; three children, two of whom are married and one at home; two grandchildren, Mary Virginia and Flavil Lee: four brothers; four sisters, and countless______ and friends to morn his departure. Our sympathy goes out to them beyond the expression of words.
