Steven Rainwater & Susan Chance-Rainwater between 29 Dec 1997 and 19 Oct 1998. Directions: This cemetery is located on West Pioneer Road between Grauwyler and Belt Line Roads in Irving, TX. Dallas Co. Mapsco reference 31A-P. A Texas Historical Commission marker was placed in 1973, and reads: "Burial plot was begun in 1868 when a woman and her daughter, whose names have been lost, were interred on the land of Sevier Smalley, a local landowner. In 1874, Edmund D. Sowers (1826-1909) and his wife, Freelove, donated one adjoining acre as a public burial ground. In his family lot, Sowers had an impressive monument erected, using the proceeds from sale of 65 acres of his land. Additional property was donated by Otis Brown (1879-1958). Many pioneer settlers of this area are buried here. Cemetery is maintained by Sowers Cemetery Association." _________________ The cemetery is well maintained, nevertheless, probably a two dozen headstones are missing and quite a few are broken. A survey was made of this cemetery in 1975 by Mr. & Mrs. O.D. Bates, Mrs. Ruth Taylor, Mrs. James T. Gardner and the Young Historian's Club of Irving. The results were deposited with the Dallas Public Library in the form of an uncopyrighted typewritten manuscript entitled "Cemeteries In and Around Irving". Since some of the damaged stones were in better condition 24 years earlier, we cross-checked the unreadable inscriptions with this manuscript. The initials [CI] indicate our reliance on this information. On the last day of recording, I learned from an elderly gentleman that the Sowers Cemetery Association no longer exists. The business of the cemetery is taken care of by a single couple. There is interest in restarting the association. If you are interested, a local funeral home should be able to put you in touch with the right people. _________________ FARINE, Albert, 1868 - 1948, Father FARINE, Rosetta, 1875 - 1947, Mother FARINE, Henry, 1900 - 1923, son PULLEN, Sarah J., 3 Mar 1836 - 16 Jan 1921 BURNETT, Henry A., 6 Mar 1868 - 18 Mar 1880, son of A. & F.E.
